Love’s Enemy

Love’s Enemy
by Mark E. Schrull

We once were
A passion Statement.
Then time, once my friend,
Chiseled away at our happiness.
My cares never focused on confusion;
Resting instead on our contentment.

We once mastered joy,
Placed it where we pleased.
But time, once my friend,
Nipped away at our peculiarities;
Then drove deep into the heart

Of our differences.
Love is
Grand and grand.
But time, once my friend,
Races with my inner soul,
Raising my expectations

To an unreachable level.
Jealousy abounds,
Ordered up by impatience;
My calmness falls apart,
My focus turns to gray,
I find myself alone again with
Time, once my friend.
